3 Days Masai Mara Safari: Big Five, Lions & the Great Migration

A 3 days Masai Mara safari is the quintessential Kenya wildlife experience. The Masai Mara National Reserve — an 1,510 km² expanse of rolling savannah in south-western Kenya — is home to the largest concentration of lions in Africa, daily sightings of leopards and cheetahs, the iconic Great Wildebeest Migration, and all of the Big Five. Three days in the Mara gives you time to experience dawn game drives, sundowner drives, and guided Maasai village visits that bring this extraordinary destination fully to life. Blue Lilac Tours & Travel crafts 3-day Masai Mara packages for solo travellers, couples, families, and small groups.

Why the Masai Mara is Africa’s Greatest Safari Destination

The Masai Mara is consistently ranked among the world’s top safari destinations for good reason. The reserve’s open grasslands support year-round resident populations of lions, elephants, buffalos, leopards, cheetahs, hippos, and crocodiles. The Mara is crossed by the Mara River, which is the dramatic stage for the Great Migration’s famous river crossings — a spectacle where hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra plunge into crocodile-filled waters in a primal, breathtaking race for survival.

Even outside migration season, the Mara’s lion density is extraordinary. Multiple prides roam the open plains, and it is not unusual to see 20 or more lions in a single morning drive. Leopards are regularly spotted in the fig trees along seasonal rivers, and the Mara Triangle — the western section of the reserve — is famous for cheetah families.

3 Days Masai Mara Safari — Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi to Masai Mara

After breakfast, your Blue Lilac Tours & Travel driver-guide will collect you from your Nairobi hotel. You’ll travel south-west towards Narok and then into the Mara, passing through the stunning Rift Valley escarpment. Lunch en route or on arrival at your camp. Check in, freshen up, and enjoy an afternoon/evening game drive to settle into the rhythm of the Mara. Dinner and overnight at your chosen camp or lodge.

Day 2: Full Day in the Masai Mara

This is the heart of your safari. Rise before dawn for a 06:00 morning game drive — the best time for predator activity. Spend the morning tracking lions, cheetahs, and leopards across the open plains. Return to camp for a full breakfast and a midday rest (the hottest and quietest hours). Lunch at the lodge. Rejoin your vehicle for a long afternoon drive (14:00–18:30), including a sunset on the plains and sundowner drinks in the bush. Dinner and overnight at camp.

Day 3: Morning Game Drive and Return to Nairobi

Enjoy one final early-morning game drive (06:00–09:00) while animals are most active. Return to camp for a full breakfast, check out, and begin the drive back to Nairobi. Arrive in Nairobi by mid-afternoon, with your guide available to drop you at your hotel, the airport, or any other Nairobi address.

Best Time for a 3-Day Masai Mara Safari

The Masai Mara delivers exceptional game-viewing year-round, but each season has its own character. July to October is peak migration season with river crossings and the largest wildlife concentrations. January to March is calving season — lions and cheetahs are especially active, and the Mara is less crowded. June and November offer excellent game-viewing with fewer vehicles. The green season (April–May) sees lush scenery and newborn animals.
