A 5 days Tanzania safari is East Africa’s most focused and rewarding short-circuit safari — a concentrated journey through two of the African continent’s most spectacular wildlife destinations. Beginning in Arusha, Tanzania’s safari capital, this itinerary takes you down into the primordial caldera of the Ngorongoro Crater (the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and a year-round Big Five arena) and across the vast Serengeti plains, home to the greatest wildlife migration on earth. Five days, two extraordinary parks, and a wildlife experience that rivals any safari on the continent. Blue Lilac Tours & Travel crafts this 5-day Tanzania circuit as a private, fully guided safari from Arusha.

Tanzania’s Northern Circuit: Africa’s Wildlife Crown Jewels
Tanzania’s northern safari circuit — anchored by the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara — is widely regarded as the finest wildlife-viewing region on earth. The two parks at the heart of this 5-day itinerary represent the circuit’s absolute pinnacle. Ngorongoro is a geological miracle: a collapsed volcanic caldera 19 km across and 600 metres deep, whose walls create a self-contained ecosystem supporting a permanently resident population of all Big Five species, year-round. The Serengeti — 14,763 km² of open grassland, kopje country, and riverine woodland — is the stage for the Great Wildebeest Migration, the largest movement of land mammals on earth, but is equally remarkable outside migration season for its extraordinary permanent wildlife density.
5 Days Tanzania Safari — Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive Arusha
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK). Transfer to your Arusha hotel. Afternoon orientation and briefing with your Blue Lilac guide. Arusha is a vibrant city with excellent restaurants and the nearby Arusha National Park (optional afternoon visit for giraffe and buffalo sightings within the city limits). Overnight Arusha.
Day 2: Arusha to Ngorongoro Crater
Depart Arusha after breakfast and drive west to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (approx. 3–3.5 hours). Stop at the crater rim for your first breathtaking view — a sheer 600-metre drop into the caldera floor below, where thousands of animals are visible as tiny dots on the green and gold grassland. Check in to your rim lodge. Afternoon at leisure or a short rim walk. Dinner and overnight at your Ngorongoro rim accommodation.
Day 3: Full Day in the Ngorongoro Crater
Descend into the crater floor early (06:30) for a full-day game drive. The crater’s dense, permanently resident wildlife population means remarkable encounter density: lions resting in the open, black rhinos browsing in the swamp edges, elephants crossing the crater floor, cheetahs on the open plain, and hippos in the crater lake. The 260 km² floor supports an estimated 25,000 large animals and some of Africa’s densest black rhino populations. Return to the rim by late afternoon. Dinner and overnight Ngorongoro rim.
Add Tarangire to Your Tanzania Safari
Ask Blue Lilac Tours & Travel about extending to our 7-day Tanzania circuit, which includes Tarangire’s baobab forests and elephant herds.
Day 4: Ngorongoro to Serengeti National Park
Depart the Ngorongoro rim after an early breakfast and drive west, crossing the Ngorongoro highlands before descending onto the Serengeti plains. The transition from the volcanic highlands to the endless grassland horizon is one of Africa’s great visual moments. En route game drive in the Serengeti’s southern sector (Ndutu area if in calving season January–March). Arrive at your central Serengeti camp/lodge by early afternoon. Afternoon game drive. Dinner and overnight Serengeti.
Day 5: Full Day in the Serengeti and Return
Pre-dawn 06:00 game drive into the Serengeti for dawn predator activity. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas are most active in the first two hours of daylight. The Serengeti’s open plains allow you to see action over vast distances — cheetah hunts, lion kills, and wildebeest river crossings (seasonal) unfold like natural theatre. Spend the full morning in the park, then return to your camp for a late breakfast and check-out. Drive east back to Arusha (approx. 4–5 hours via the Ngorongoro Conservation Area). Arrive Arusha by evening. Transfer to your hotel or Kilimanjaro International Airport for onward travel.
