Why Kenya’s Bush and Beach Is One of Africa’s Great Holidays

Kenya is one of the very few countries on earth where you can be tracking lions on a sunlit savannah in the morning and sipping a cocktail on a pristine Indian Ocean beach three days later. The contrast is visceral and deeply satisfying — the sensory intensity of the bush (dust, heat, the smell of acacia, the raw drama of predator and prey) gives way to the cool sea breeze, white sand, and the kaleidoscopic underwater world of Kenya’s fringing coral reef. The two halves make each other richer, and the transition feels earned.

Diani Beach, on Kenya’s South Coast, is consistently ranked among Africa’s finest beaches. Its 17 km of powdery coral sand, turquoise shallow lagoon protected by a fringing reef, and a thriving beach village atmosphere make it the ideal landing point after a week in the bush. Add world-class snorkelling, dolphin-watching dhow trips, and some of East Africa’s best seafood, and the beach section of this itinerary becomes an experience in its own right.

Day 10: Return to Nairobi or International Departure

Morning at leisure on the beach. Transfer to Ukunda airstrip for a short flight to Nairobi (approx. 1 hour) or drive to Mombasa Moi International Airport for direct international flights. Blue Lilac Tours & Travel arranges all onward connections.

The Beach in Detail: Diani, Kenya’s South Coast

Diani Beach stretches for 17 km along the South Coast, flanked inland by the Jadini Forest — one of Kenya’s most important coastal forests and home to Angola colobus monkeys that can often be spotted in the resort gardens. The beach itself is wide, flat, and sheltered by a coral reef that creates a safe, calm lagoon ideal for swimming and water sports at all tides. Sunsets over the Indian Ocean are spectacular, and the seafood — fresh crab, lobster, octopus, and reef fish — is among the best in East Africa.
