A 3 days Amboseli National Park safari immerses you in one of Africa’s most visually arresting wildlife landscapes: vast open plains, shimmering swamps, and elephant herds so large they seem to stretch to the horizon — all framed by the snow-capped silhouette of Mount Kilimanjaro. Amboseli is justifiably famous as the world’s best destination for close, intimate encounters with free-ranging African elephants, and three days gives you enough time to experience the park’s full range of moods — from the ethereal pink sunrise over Kilimanjaro to the golden afternoon light on elephant families wading through the swamps. Blue Lilac Tours & Travel offers fully guided Amboseli safaris for individuals, families, and small groups.

Amboseli National Park: The World’s Elephant Capital
Amboseli National Park sits at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro at 1,100 metres above sea level, spanning 392 km² of ancient lakebed, seasonal grassland, and perennial swamp. The park is fed by underground springs flowing from Kilimanjaro’s glaciers, creating the permanently watered swamps of Enkongo Narok and Ol Tukai that sustain wildlife through even the driest periods.
The park’s elephant population — approximately 1,600 individuals organised into over 60 family groups — has been studied continuously since 1972 by the Amboseli Elephant Research Project, the longest-running elephant research programme in the world. As a result, Amboseli’s elephants are remarkably relaxed around respectful vehicles, allowing unparalleled photographic access to intimate family interactions, mother-calf bonding, and the magnificent sight of bull elephants in musth. Several of Africa’s last great tuskers — bulls carrying tusks so large they nearly touch the ground — call Amboseli home.
3 Days Amboseli Safari — Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli National Park
Your Blue Lilac Tours & Travel driver-guide will collect you from your Nairobi hotel after an early breakfast. The drive south-east takes approximately 4 hours, passing through Emali town and into the Amboseli ecosystem. After park entry, enjoy a lunch stop at your lodge before a late-afternoon game drive through the swamps and open plains. This first drive often delivers outstanding elephant encounters as families move from the woodlands to the water. Dinner and overnight at your Amboseli accommodation.
Day 2: Full Day in Amboseli
Your most rewarding day begins before sunrise. Rise at 05:30 for a 06:00 morning game drive timed to catch Kilimanjaro’s peak illuminated by the rising sun — one of Africa’s most photographed scenes. Spend the morning hours with elephant families in the swamps, track lions and cheetahs on the open plains, and watch hippos in the permanent pools. Return for a full breakfast at the lodge and a midday rest. Rejoin your vehicle at 14:00 for a long afternoon drive, following elephant herds as they move to the swamp for their evening drink. Sundowner drinks on the plains. Return to lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Morning Game Drive and Return to Nairobi
One final 06:00 game drive for a last chance at a Kilimanjaro sunrise and morning elephant encounters. Return to the lodge for breakfast and check-out. Depart Amboseli by 09:30–10:00 for the drive back to Nairobi, arriving by early afternoon. Your guide will drop you at your hotel, the airport, or any other Nairobi address.

Best Time to Visit Amboseli National Park
Amboseli is rewarding year-round thanks to its permanent swamps. The dry seasons (January–March and June–October) offer the clearest Kilimanjaro views and the best predator activity as animals concentrate around water. The wet season (November–December and April–May) brings dramatic skies, lush greenery, and exceptional birdlife including thousands of migratory waders.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Amboseli unique compared to other Kenya national parks?
Amboseli offers Africa’s most reliable elephant encounters — large, habituated herds against the dramatic backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak. No other Kenyan park combines mega-herd elephant watching with such iconic mountain scenery.
Is Amboseli good for Big Five game viewing?
Yes. While elephants are the headline act, Amboseli also supports lions, cheetahs, buffalos, and — though less commonly — leopards. It is not a traditional Big Five tick-box park, but the depth and quality of individual species encounters is exceptional.
What is the accommodation like in Amboseli?
Amboseli lodges and tented camps range from classic full-board safari lodges to more intimate boutique camps on private conservancies bordering the park. All include meals and most offer twice-daily game drives.
Can I see Kilimanjaro from Amboseli during a 3-day safari?
With two morning drives over 3 days, you have an excellent chance of clear Kilimanjaro views. The summit is most visible in the early morning before cloud builds. Our guides plan drives to maximise your sunrise Kilimanjaro opportunities.
How do I get to Amboseli from Nairobi on a 3-day safari?
Blue Lilac Tours & Travel drives you from Nairobi to Amboseli in approximately 4 hours. We can also arrange charter flights into Amboseli airstrip, which reduces travel time to under an hour.
